FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Will cracks appear on my poured concrete foundation?

As concrete cures the mixing water used in concrete evaporates from the concrete and causes the concrete to shrink. This may result in some cracks in the foundation. These cracks are not a structural concern and will not cause a water leak if the foundation is waterproofed.

Can I add brick or stone to my foundation or retaining wall?

Absolutely. This can be accomplished in two ways. First, we can incorporate a brick or stone ledge in the wall. This will allow the brick or stone to follow just below the grade, giving the appearance of brick or stone to the footing. Second, your mason can brick or stack stone directly off the footing. Depending on the depth of the footing, a brick or stone ledge in the poured wall may save you money and time.

How quickly can I backfill around newly constructed concrete walls?

In Summer, we recommend waiting at least 7 calendar days. In Winter, at least 18 calendar days. Also, it is important that no heavy machinery be operated close to the top of any cast-in-place (CIP) wall. Doing so may create cracks or other problems which could lead to wall failure.

What is the difference between damp proofing and waterproofing?

Damp proofing does not provide a permanent barrier where waterproofing does. Damp proofing does not offer a guarantee against water infiltration where waterproofing can offer up to a lifetime guarantee. Waterproofing is a thick membrane applied to the outside face of the foundation. It remains pliable throughout its life.

What are the payment terms?

Payment is due at completion of work. Interest of 1.5% per month will be charged for all unpaid invoices 30 days and older. A completed Credit Application must be on file prior to start of work. Herbert Construction will not share or sell your financial or personal information.

Aren’t all foundation contractors the same? After all, it is only concrete, isn’t it?

No, all foundation contractors or companies are not the same. When selecting your foundation contractor, ask some basic questions. How much experience do they have? What major builders or customers do they work with? Can they reference any recent work in the area?

We would answer...
We have been in business since 1978. Builders like Beazer Homes and Traton Homes, to just name a few.  We build residential and commercial foundations just about every weekday, often several per day. At Herbert Construction Co., we are so proud of our work, we will gladly direct you to any number of examples in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
